Ruby giggled as Diamond covered her with frantic, sloppy kisses.

“Uh oh. Looks like I’ve got some competition,” Brandon joked before letting out a happy sigh.

She reached over to scratch her dog between those oversized ears she adored and smiled at Brandon shyly. She’d told him she didn’t want a romantic relationship when they first became friends, but she’d also changed her mind in the time since. And their kiss, while brief, had been just as perfect as she’d often imagined it would be.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, finding a way to balance work and love. And even if it proved difficult, at least it would be worth it.

Love.

Could that really be in the cards for her someday soon?

She’d certainly come to value Brandon as a friend. What would things look like between them now that they’ve shared the first of what she hoped would be many more kisses to come?

Brandon cleared his throat, then laced his fingers in hers. “I hope that was okay. What I did.” He studied her hesitantly, as if waiting for something to go wrong. No, everything was very much right.

“It was more than okay,” she assured him with an awkward nod.

His smile grew as he shifted his focus to Diamond. “I don’t think our doggie chaperone would agree with you.”

Ruby glanced down and saw that her usually carefree corgi was now standing guard with her full attention pointed directly at Brandon. “Oh, she’s just not used to things like that happening,” she admitted with a laugh. Truth be told, neither was she. “Besides, it’s in her nature to herd. Maybe she thought you got too close and had to put you back in your place.”

“Back in my place, huh?” He raised both eyebrows in question. “Well, what do you think about that?” He seemed even more nervous than she felt, and that realization made her fall even harder for him.

She gave his hand a squeeze to show him she meant what she said. “For once, I disagree with her. Sorry, Di.”

Brandon leaned in and kissed her cheek, which immediately upset the corgi again. “Oh, relax!” he said, tossing a smile the little dog’s way.

Warmth lingered from where Brandon’s lips had pressed against her skin, but soon that pleasant sensation became unbearably hot. She glanced past him and noticed a couple of women staring straight at her with intense, probing looks on their faces. When she swept her vision further around the terrace, Ruby found even more people observing her and Brandon.

“I think we’re being watched,” she mumbled, giving his hand a squeeze, this time because she felt afraid.

“Well, yeah. You happen to be the brightest rising star in fashion. Of course we’re being watched.” He raised their joined hand and kissed the back of hers, completely unbothered by the fact that their tender moment had an audience.

“I don’t think that’s why they’re looking,” she confided in him with a frown.

“Don’t worry about them,” Brandon said as he stood, then also helped to pull Ruby onto her feet.
